One forgotten post...the long and winding road!
I can't believe I didn't give solid details about what was perhaps one of the scariest driving experiences I have had.
After leaving Leggett and the Redwoods, I wanted to cross over to Highway 1, as you know! I thought it would be the perfect place to do so, since Leggett was where the 2 highways crossed.
What nobody told me (well, I guess I didn't ask!) was that I would have to cross the FOREST-COVERED mountains to get to the coastline. Well, actually I did know that from looking on the map. BUT...I to this moment am amazed at 2 things: 1)That people don't die on that stretch of highway every single day, and 2)How did they make that road and was it a joke???
It was about 25 miles of twists and turns, going 10-20 miles an hour, turning one corner to find another...it was making ME carsick at the wheel!! We felt sorry for those who would have to drive it regularly. Thankfully, there were barely any other cars - and absolutely no signs of life anywhere! Even if you are a safe driver - there is no guarantee the other guy is - and it would take just one slight error to be a fatal one.
When we finally reached the coast, it was such a relief! But that of course was slow going as well. When I turned toward Willits at Fort Bragg, I didn't think I would experience it again since that would be a more popular stretch of highway...but I was wrong. 20 miles back over the mountains, this time with more traffic and almost just as many sharp twists and turns. We were glad to make it safe and sound.
Oh - and the little Corolla came in handy too. :)
